Colman: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ENGLISH?

Almost 40 years ago the people of California made English the official language of the State.  Now, if you get a drivers license they have rule books in several languages, you no longer need to speak English to get a license.  In a few days you will get your ballot.  In English, or one of several other languages.  You must be able to read and speak English to become an American citizen.  In California apparently it does not matter.

English must be the national language of California (and the rest of the United States).

Nations that have more than one language, such as Canada and Belgium, have problems with social coherence.

If the United States were to become something other than a monolingual nation how would debates in Congress and state legislatures be handled?  Would there is a need for interpreters and translators?

Legal immigrants should always be welcome in America.  But there is one requirement for them:  They must learn English.”

Dozens of languages.  Dozens of “genders”, no rule of law.  California is the chaos State.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ENGLISH?

English is supposed to be the language of the United States.

The Declaration of Independence is written in English.  So is the Constitution.

In 1986, California’s voters approved Proposition 63, making English the official language of California.  The vote was 73% in favor of the proposition while 27% voted to oppose the measure.

America is a free country and allows freedom of speech.  Immigrants are an important part of American culture, and no disrespect against legal immigrants is intended.

However, anecdotal evidence suggests in certain situations, English is disappearing in California (and perhaps in other states).

Go into a typical California gasoline station.  The chances are that the person behind the counter may not be familiar with English.

The same is true in many other California businesses:  dry cleaners; pharmacies; restaurants; banks; food stores; and low-cost “dollar” stores.

In one example, a customer in a restaurant serving foreign cuisine asked for a spoon.  The server did not know what a spoon is.

  1. The treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo with Mexico made Spanish a legal language in the territory ceded to the US after the war. That covers a huge part of the Southwest
