Steve Garvey: LA Dodger—Draft Dodger—or Both
This is a simple story of white privilege and a self-centered entitled athlete.
Steve Garvey played baseball and other sports for Michigan State. At no time did he mention his “headaches” nor did his physicals find any problems.
In 1968 the LA Dodgers gave him a contract. At no time did he inform them, nor did they find during his physical, any debilitating problems.
In 1970, like a lot of other young Americas, he was drafted into the Army. During the required military physical did not find any problems, nor did he tell them he had a debilitating physical problem, migraines?
AFTER he was drafted and sent to Ft. Jackson, he was not happy to serve in the military and wanted out.
His girlfriend at the time, later wife, Cynthia Truhan, received phone calls from him. The purpose? For HER to describe to him her symptoms of migraines. He used that to create a plan to get out of the military.
Here is his own handwriting is the proof:
“Well planned escape is being plotted in the SPG (Steven P Garvey) brain center. If I can get five good letters I think it could work”
Yes, it did work. While many poor, middle class, regular young men—many of whom were black—were drafted. He schemed with the LA Dodgers to get out of the draft and back on the playing field—at a BIG salary. This is what white privilege looked like.
Once out of the Army on a “medical” discharge, he went back to playing for the Dodgers—and made lots of money. This while black and poor white Americans, without the resources of the Dodgers behind them, had to fight and die in Viet Nam. I have contacted the Dodgers to explain their role in all this. Like Garvey, they refuse to answer. One of the five letters came from the Dodgers doctor, Dr. Woods—who might have arranged for the other four letters. (full disclosure: I served in the Army, in the First Infantry Division in Viet Nam)
Maybe a reporter will ask him about this. So far they have refused to ask about why his forged his wife’s signature on a $110,000 check. Nor have they asked about who actually owns the house he lives in, in La Quinta. Or why he scammed numerous vendors in Utah—forcing him to leave that State.
The LA Times did a story about his lies about his refusal to meet THREE of his children, cut out two of his children—and refuses to see his grandchildren. BTW—does he have seven kids—as he now admits—or does he have EIGHT?
These issues may be brought up tonight in the debate. If it isn’t, expect Adam Schiff or Katie Porter to destroy him and the Republican candidates with this information—which I am told the Democrats already have.
How many veterans would vote for Steve Garvey?
Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Gavin Newsom did not serve in the military. And Veterans voted for them. Your Bias is showing!
This is more than just a bias. Perhaps there’s an underlying love for the Yankees vs Dodgers here? In any event it appears to be more than helping us find the right candidate to end the god awful reign of Adm Schiff.
Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Gavin Newsom did not serve in the military and veterans voted for them. Your bias is showing!
And which Republican do you suggest?
Exactly!
Steve, I love Eric Early (the guy I assume you prefer), but he has absolutely no chance of finishing second. We need a #2 on the ballot to get the Republican message out. We may not win, but we will never gain parity unless we can get our message to the voters, who only pay attention during elections. Keep trashing Garvey and you will have a Schiff-Porter race with both of them screaming they are more progressive/socialist than the other. All the public will hear is that EVERYONE believes that the only rational future is progressive socialism. Getting a message out during a campaign is the only wedge we can get into the dominant media narrative. It’s an ELECTION, Steve, not a purity contest. We need to take steps that will help build the Republican party in California.
I have NO preferred candidate in this race. My concern is what Garvey does to the credibility of the GOP> The Democrats will make us the party of criminals, women and children haters and draft dodgers. Everyone of our candidates will be pressed to to respond to the question–“how do you support a candidate of such low ethics” They will be asked why wasn’t he prosecuted for forgery? Why does he hate his children and grandchildren? While many poor and minorities were drafted, he scammed his way out of the draft during a war.
Seriously, you and everyone knows Garvey can not win in November. He is refusing to answer questions about his background and lifestyle–the media will kill him and ads will make him out as he really is.
Some of the charges against him just don’t pan out. Garvey filed papers trying to get to see his kids and his son is now working on his campaign. He’s been happily married to his current wife since 2007. His interest in politics is nothing new and he has a very good chance of making it past the Primary to the November ballot, in spite of the naysayers. It’s simple really. If you’re happy with Adam Schiff, so be it. If not, at least we’ll have a choice.
Right–he did file papers with the court to see his then teenage daughters. In court that told the judge they did not want to see him. That is the rest of the story. he has two children, now 34, that requested to see him–he refused and he has NEVER met them. He refuses to see his grandchildren–he has never met them..
Sadly, we could be given a choice between a hater like Schiff and an ethically and morally challenged person like Garvey.
We have a challenging primary to deal with. We should not fall into the “celebrity” status of a person to get them on the ballot but look for a principled person who has the desire to serve the people of California. With Trump doing so well all over the state, there could be a surprise showing by previously non-participating Republicans who are seeking a good candidate like Eric Early. We must all learn about Eric and put the word out to our colleagues that he is the very best choice.
