| California lawmakers had ambitious plans to ban child marriage in the state—seems like a no-brainer, right? Who even knew it was legal? Full disclosure, we did not, until recently. |
| However, a proposed law to ban kids from getting hitched has died because of internal divisions within the Democratic Party. And perhaps not unsurprisingly, Governor Newsom has remained silent on the issue. |

| The Proposal |
| In February, a bipartisan bill was introduced (AB 2924) that would set a minimum age of 18 to marry in California, with no exceptions. |
| The bill is supported by 30 lawmakers (both DEM and GOP), the Legislative Women’s Caucus, UNICEF, dozens of other state and national organizations, and child marriage survivors. |
| Who’s Against It |
| The ACLU claims banning child marriage would be “denying these young people the right to marry.”Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California said hold up, this law would impinge on a minor’s right to get access to contraceptives, abortions, and other reproductive rights.Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman Ash Kalra demanded amendments that would have gutted the bill. In effect, the Democratic chairman killed the measure before it ever went to a vote. |
