SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana Unified School District may be one step closer to possibly implementing a massive teacher layoff.

During Thursday night’s meeting, the Santa Ana Unified school board voted 4-1 in favor of the proposed layoffs.

While nothing is official until 2025, the proposed staffing changes may impact more than 300 educators across the district.

Earlier in the week, the school board had proposed a 3% salary bump and a 3% bonus for Superintendent Jerry Almendarez, who makes close to $450,000 a year.

Almendarez, in previous reports, had pointed to the budget cuts stepping from the district no longer having COVID-related funding and a steep drop in student enrollment in recent years.

During Thursday’s board meeting, school leaders said the district is facing a $180 million deficit.
