SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A day after President Donald Trump announced sweeping executive action regarding immigration and mass deportations, a California congressman announced a plan to limit undocumented immigrants’ access to Medicaid.
Rep. Kevin Kiley, a Republican who represents Northern California’s largest congressional district geographically, introduced what is called the “No Medicaid for Illegal Immigrants Act.”
According to a release from Kiley’s office, the federal bill would prohibit states from using federal and state Medicaid funds to provide services for undocumented residents. There is an exception for emergency health care services.
The release claims the bill would save California taxpayers billions of dollars each year.
“This common sense legislation ensures that taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits are preserved for those who lawfully qualify, prioritizing the needs of American citizens and legal residents while promoting fairness and fiscal responsibility,” Kiley said in the release.
In January 2024, California expanded Medi-Cal benefits to all undocumented immigrants, increasing services for about 750,000 adults ages 26 to 49. Medicaid is a public health insurance program for people with low incomes.

KCRA 3 reached out to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office for comment.
On the same day Kiley introduced his proposal, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the state filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump in response to his executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship.
We can not let anyone, documented or undocumented die on the streets. Anyone in the US who needs medical care should be taken care of. What we need to do is reduce the number of documented people in the US and deport the undocumented
Increase the number of those who belong here legally, and deport the undocumented.
