Planned Parenthood opens its largest health care center in downtown Oakland

Oakland is the city of deficit, failed schools, businesses and families moving out.  Now they have declared themselves the modern killing field of California.

“As a new presidential administration hostile to abortion and other reproductive rights takes power, Planned Parenthood is planting its largest health care facility in the heart of Oakland.

Located in the historic Central Building at 1400 Broadway, across from Frank Ogawa Plaza downtown, the facility offers 19 exam rooms and 12,000 square feet — making it the largest Planned Parenthood health center in the country, said spokesperson Andrew Adams. It opened on Dec. 17.”

Ne2wsom has made California the destiny for the killing of babies—and Oakland is taking advantage of it.  Of course they named the facility after the former Marxist Congresswoman and soon to be Mayor, Barbara Lee—a lover of Fidel Castro, a mass killer himself.

It’s named for mayoral hopeful and former U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, who talked about her abortion during a House Committee hearing in 2021.

As a new presidential administration hostile to abortion and other reproductive rights takes power, Planned Parenthood is planting its largest health care facility in the heart of Oakland.

Planned Parenthood offers sliding-scale health care, including abortion, contraception, prenatal care, and hormone therapy for people who are transitioning. The new downtown facility is officially named the Barbara Lee Oakland Health Center.

“As Oakland is making a comeback from the pandemic, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte really wanted to visually demonstrate our commitment to the Oakland community and the revitalization of downtown Oakland in particular,” Adams told The Oaklandside. “The reality is, with abortion restrictions and restrictions on gender-affirming care increasing throughout the country, we’re seeing more and more patients who need to come to California and in particular Oakland to get essential health care.”

Since June 2022, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and with it the half-century-old constitutional protections for abortion, 12 states have completely banned the procedure and six more have outlawed abortion after 6 or 12 weeks, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Beyond that, a patchwork of abortion restrictions — like mandatory waiting periods, prohibitions on mailing abortion pills, and forbidding public insurance options from covering the procedure — make it more difficult for women to terminate their pregnancies.

The Supreme Court is also expected to rule this year on a case regarding gender-affirming health care treatments for minors.

Over the last two and a half years, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte — the region covering 34 health centers in California and Nevada — has served patients coming in from 39 other states, Adams said.

With the opening of the downtown Oakland location, the previous Planned Parenthood center in Oakland near the Coliseum was closed. While it was near a BART stop, patients still needed a car to get there, Adams said. The downtown site is on top of the 12th street BART station and is served by multiple AC Transit bus lines, making it convenient for those coming in from all over the Bay Area and from out of state, Adams said.

With its 19 exam rooms, the Barbara Lee Oakland Health Center will also serve as a training hub for students and other medical professionals who may not be able to get practice in abortion or gender-affirming care in their own states.

“Those larger training rooms are really important to us as an organization to destigmatize all kinds of sexual health care including abortion,” Adams added.

Lee, who is running for Oakland mayor, represented Oakland and the East Bay in Congress for 27 years. As a legislator, she has been a defender of abortion rights, and during a House committee hearing on abortion laws in 2021, she revealed she’d traveled to Mexico for an unsafe abortion when she was 16 years old.

“I was one of the lucky ones. A lot of girls and women in my generation didn’t make it,” Lee said during the hearing. “In the 1960s, unsafe septic abortions were the primary killer of African American women.”

A mural in the waiting room of the Barbara Lee Oakland Health Center features the former congresswoman and images representing Oakland’s history of activism, crafted by Oakland muralist Jessica Sabogal.

A private ribbon cutting will be held next month along with a fundraiser to offset the costs that Planned Parenthood Mar Monte takes on to subsidize care. Last year, that amount was $16 million, Adams said.

  1. If what Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger stood for means anything, no wonder they opened a location up in OAKLAND. Though the next time I’m in the Bay Area will be the first, Oakland is heavily, if not plurality, Black, and Margaret Sanger was Daivd Duke in a skirt.
