The Central Valley has been on heightened alert even before Trump took office, with Customs and Border Patrol operations in Kern County netting a reported 78 arrests and even more detainments in early January.

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, the president has followed through on promises to begin mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Farm labor advocates and even some grower representatives have spoken out against the policies and enforcement actions, saying they profile Latino farmworkers indiscriminately and undermine the food supply.

Educational leaders are also speaking out on the potential impact to students

“As an immigrant who has personally experienced immigration raids in the Central Valley fields, I understand the fear and uncertainty that arises from the constant threat of deportation,” Arias said in a statement. “By fostering collaboration between the City and County, we can ensure that the same individuals who protected us from empty grocery shelves during a pandemic have the same level of support throughout our region and are not unjustly targeted or adversely affected by harmful policies.
