University of California children’s hospital sued for ‘teens of color’ program

Even our children’s hospitals have become dens for the discrimination of the Klan in Tan.  Now hospitals are discriminating, like the health care facilities in Alabama in 1950.

“The University of California San Francisco discriminates on the basis of race through its Community Health and Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success, according to a pending federal lawsuit.

The CHAMPS program at Benioff Children’s Hospitals is designed to “support minority high school students interested in health professions,” according to its website. The three-year internship “combines a comprehensive academic program with career planning and clinical shadowing experiences” including “six- to eight-week clinical rotations in various hospital departments.”

Elsewhere, the university says the program is for “teens of color” who want to go into healthcare.”

Newsom is right—racism is systemic in California—just look at the hospitals and schools.  He is running the most racist State in America since George Wallace was Governor of Alabama.

The University of California San Francisco discriminates on the basis of race through its Community Health and Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success, according to a pending federal lawsuit.

Elsewhere, the university says the program is for “teens of color” who want to go into healthcare.

The program violates both federal and state law, however, according to the Pacific Legal Foundation.

The foundation is representing plaintiff G.H., a minor under a pseudonym that is “fighting back with a federal equal protection challenge to restore equal treatment and educational opportunity for all students, regardless of race,” according to comments provided to The College Fix via email. The CHAMPS program rejected the plaintiff, a 15-year-old girl, “because of her race and ethnicity,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit’s lead counsel provided further comments to The Fix.

“U.S. and California Constitutions… prohibit the UC Regents and UCSF Benioff from discriminating against students based on race,” Andrew Quinio told The Fix via email. “The UC Regents and UCSF Benioff should be treating students as individuals, including those aspiring to enter the medical field.”

“UCSF Health is one of the best care providers in the nation, and hopefully they will maintain that outstanding level of care by expanding opportunity to all bright and capable students dreaming of becoming doctors and nurses, regardless of their race,” Quinio said.

The Pacific Legal Foundation “look[s] forward to obtaining justice for her and all students who seek out a future where all individuals, regardless of race, are recognized for their abilities and character.”

Changing the program would benefit G.H., the plaintiff, a “bright, ambitious young woman who dreams of a future in medicine” and attends Berkeley High School, according to the lawsuit.

“When G.H. revealed she was white, UCSF Benioff slammed the door to this opportunity shut in her face,” the lawsuit states.

The student, whose last name is Hooley, picked “Not listed” on her application form when asked for her race – only minority races were listed on the form. However, the interviewer required Hooley to give her race during a Dec. 2024 interview, during which she said she was white.

The children’s hospital “ejected G.H. because she was not the right race for the CHAMPS internship. G.H.’s impressive background, high GPA, and passion for helping others through healthcare made her a strong candidate for the internship, but UCSF Benioff’s race-conscious admissions meant it could not even consider G.H.’s qualification,” the lawsuit argues.

The next step in this lawsuit is for UC Regents to respond to the filed complaint, review the program, and recognize its “unconstitutional” criteria, according to the Pacific Legal Foundation.

CHAMPS program manager, Michelle Ednacot, did not respond to multiple requests for information via email and by phone. The Fix asked for comment about student eligibility, if an attorney had reviewed the program, and goals of the initiative.

The initiative for “teens of color” helps students “go on to diversify the U.S health care system… the program is about training a health care workforce that looks like those it serves,” according to a UCFS news article.

The university also published statistics about minorities being underrepresented in medicine:

Research shows Black, Hispanic and Native American physicians are more likely than their white peers to practice in underserved communities. Yet, just 5% of the country’s physicians are Black compared to a U.S. population of about 15%. Hispanic physicians are similarly under-represented. There are disparities on the health outcomes side as well, with Black and Hispanic patients being less likely to receive life-saving heart surgeries and proper pain care compared to white patients. In fact, communities of color are less likely to have access to a physician at all.

The media team at UCSF did not respond to multiple requests for information via email and by phone. The Fix asked for a response regarding the lawsuit and its accusations, legal review of their programming, and about larger DEI efforts.

  1. If a black student does not measure up with the criteria for selection, they cry racism. If w white student does not measure up, it is because they did not measure up. No discrimination cry here!
