California Salmon Fishing May Be Shut Down

California Losing Jobs, Families and Fish

California is a loser.

We have lost our education facilities to racists, sexual groomers and people who hate parents and children.  We have lost enrollment in government schools

We have lost our energy and jobs.  We have lost businesses and families.

Now we are losing our fish due to government action.

“According to Chuck Holton’s new article at the Christian Broadcasting Network, social services “charities” that have been propped up not by real charity but by taxpayer dollars and debt and dealt in the migrant trafficking trade, have now abandoned their foreign charges seeking to self-deport in the face of President Trump’s deportation promises. As Holt reports, the “aid groups” are now withholding all the food, water, housing, and money they were to compassionately shelling out when they enticed these foreigners northward, telling them they’re on their own if they want to get back home.

“Scott Artis, the executive director for the Golden State Salmon Association, blamed the state’s water policies for contributing to plummeting salmon populations, claiming that Governor Gavin Newsom prioritized the water for agricultural purposes rather than aiding the salmon’s environment, the Los Angeles Times reported.

However, the state says it is taking action to benefit the salmon population, such as removing dams that hinder their migration and restoring tidal habitats, the Los Angeles Times reported.”

Sadly, those backing the salmon have lost their common sense and reality.  Newsom has been allowing water to be taken from agriculture and then flow into the ocean.  We would have more food, at less cost, if he used the water for farms—not whales.

Fish Farms Meant To Boost Wild Salmon Are Killing Them

California officials are debating whether to cancel the salmon fishing season for the third year in a row amid a concerningly low Chinook salmon population in the Sacramento Valley.

Why It Matters

In 2023 and 2024, California officials installed a statewide ban on salmon fishing amid concerningly low population numbers of the Sacramento Valley’s fall-run Chinook salmon.

If another ban is implemented this year, a possibility given the Chinook population resembles that of 2023, it will be the first time salmon fishing has been banned in the Golden State for three years in a row.

What to Know

California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) data estimates the population of Sacramento Valley’s fall-run Chinook salmon to be around 166,000, the Los Angeles Times reported. The numbers are nearly 50,000 lower than estimates made for the 2024 season and more closely resemble the population for the 2023 season, which was estimated to be around 169,000.

Officials banned salmon fishing in 2023 and 2024 to give the salmon population a chance to recover, but based on the DFW’s estimates, it appears the Chinook salmon haven’t recovered.

severe drought plaguing California for years contributed to the salmon decline, given low flows in rivers mean warmer water temperatures, which can create an environment inhospitable for salmon.

Scott Artis, the executive director for the Golden State Salmon Association, blamed the state’s water policies for contributing to plummeting salmon populations, claiming that Governor Gavin Newsom prioritized the water for agricultural purposes rather than aiding the salmon’s environment, the Los Angeles Times reported.

However, the state says it is taking action to benefit the salmon population, such as removing dams that hinder their migration and restoring tidal habitats, the Los Angeles Times reported.

What People Are Saying

A spokesperson for California DFW told Newsweek: “CDFW is supporting and engaging in the federal process unfolding now at the Pacific Fisheries Management Council to determine best steps for the salmon fishery in California.”

A spokesperson for the Pacific Fishery Management Council told Newsweek: “Salmon returns to the Klamath and Sacramento rivers remained low in 2023 and 2024. However, habitat conditions are forecasted to improve for Sacramento River salmon, and the removal of the Klamath river dams is anticipated to result in increased salmon survival in the future.”

Scott Artis said in a press release in late February: “Enough is enough. We are ignoring the dying canary in the coalmine that is suffocating from California’s bad water policies. The Newsom administration is starving our rivers, fish, wildlife, and every fisherman, family, and business that relies on the Bay-Delta watershed for their survival.”

Artis added: “This is not a fishing problem. The salmon fishery has been closed for two years and that means all fingers are pointing at poor water management. The Governor has the power to protect California’s salmon and fishing communities, but time and again, he’s sacrificed salmon families to cater to the state’s big ag water interests.”

California DFW Director Charlton Bonham said in a report by the Los Angeles Times: “I have great joy and excitement about some of the progress, and I also still have great uncertainty and sadness about the challenges we’re seeing for salmon.”

What Happens Next

California’s fishing season usually takes place between May and October, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Pacific Fishery Management Council, which manages fisheries for salmon and other fish species in California, Oregon and Washington, is expected to issue a decision on whether to ban salmon fishing in April.
