Claremont College has a yearly tuition north of $80,000. For that you get street language and illiterates.
“Correcting students’ grammar is racist and should be avoided, two tutors hired by Claremont McKenna’s Center for Writing and Public Discourse were told.
During their onboarding process, the two student consultants “were assigned a research paper that detailed the ways that providing writing feedback can be racist – and the ways that writing consultants fail to effectively act as anti-racist advocates.”
“As consultants, we were urged by our superiors to not correct student’s grammar or issues that may arise from dialectal differences and departures from [Standard American English] without request,” they wrote in an op-ed in the Claremont Independent, an independent student news outlet.”
This is a college without standards—a diploma from Claremont is as valuable as a ticket to Disneyland—you can have fun, but will learn nothing.
Claremont McKenna College writing tutors told correcting grammar is racist

Correcting students’ grammar is racist and should be avoided, two tutors hired by Claremont McKenna’s Center for Writing and Public Discourse were told.
During their onboarding process, the two student consultants “were assigned a research paper that detailed the ways that providing writing feedback can be racist – and the ways that writing consultants fail to effectively act as anti-racist advocates.”
“As consultants, we were urged by our superiors to not correct student’s grammar or issues that may arise from dialectal differences and departures from [Standard American English] without request,” they wrote in an op-ed in the Claremont Independent, an independent student news outlet.
“We were expected to adhere to the belief that all dialects should be considered part of academic writing, and that to consider otherwise is to partake in racist ideology,” they wrote in a piece published Sunday.
The research paper they were assigned argued “Standard American English … represents the erasure of students’ other linguistic tools and languages,” they wrote. The 2023 paper, “How to Play the Game: Tutors’ Complicated Perspectives on Practicing Anti-racism,” seeks to articulate the role of writing centers in combating systemic inequities.
“Rather than simply correcting students’ grammar, consultants are encouraged to create a new style of writing to protect [students’] feelings and prevent discrimination,” the two student consultants wrote.
They added they disagreed with the directive, arguing Standard American English does not “erase” other dialects but simply standardizes the use of language in an academic setting.
“Implying that students of different racial backgrounds are unwilling, or unable, to meet academic writing standards is insulting and diminishes their capacity to engage in professional, scholarly work,” the two wrote.
Claremont McKenna is one of five private schools situated in Southern California in a consortium cluster that also includes Scripps, Harvey Mudd, Pomona and Pitzer colleges. Claremont McKenna is considered the more conservative-leaning of the five.
This is not the first time one of the consortium’s writing centers prompted criticism. In 2016, a white male student resigned from his campus job at Pomona College’s Writing Center after his faculty bosses called him an obstacle to providing a safe space, as The College Fix reported at the time.
It’s also not uncommon in academic settings for scholars to push the idea that correcting grammar is racist, sometimes referred to as “Black linguistic justice.” Many university writing centers have worked over the last decade to combat so-called “racist … unjust language structures.”
What’s more, in 2020, Rutgers University’s English Department called for a deemphasis on traditional grammar “in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.”
As little as MOST people like to have their grammar corrected, it has more to do with things stemming from a lack of humility or a distaste for being told what to do and many other reasons, but they have NOTHING to do with race. Also, it’s safe to say they who are saying trying to correct grammar is racist clearly have a different set of rules for Lefties from everyone else and likely are not stingy with doing to others what they don’t want the Right to do.
