| California lawmakers had ambitious plans to ban child marriage in the stateāseems like a no-brainer, right? Who even knew it was legal? Full disclosure, we did not, until recently. |
| However, a proposed law to ban kids from getting hitched has died because of internal divisions within the Democratic Party. And perhaps not unsurprisingly, Governor Newsom has remained silent on the issue. |

| In February, a bipartisan bill was introduced (AB 2924) that would set a minimum age of 18 to marry in California, with no exceptions. |
| The bill is supported by 30 lawmakers (both DEM and GOP), the Legislative Womenās Caucus, UNICEF, dozens of other state and national organizations, and child marriage survivors. |

| The ACLU claims banning child marriage would be ādenying these young people the right to marry.āPlanned Parenthood Affiliates of California said hold up, this law would impinge on a minorās right to get access to contraceptives, abortions, and other reproductive rights.Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman Ash Kalra demanded amendments that would have gutted the bill. In effect, the Democratic chairman killed the measure before it ever went to a vote. |
