Caldwell: President Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Message

In a couple of days we will be celebrating a truly American holiday, Thanksgiving.

No matter how bad our community, State or nation has become, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

With all the problems we have in this nation, we still have the ability to solve them.

Lincoln’s Thanksgiving proclamation gave thanks for the blessings of industry, the plough, our natural resources such as iron and coal, and the axe that enlarged our borders, as gifts of God.  Lincoln recognized that “No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.”

Let us remember who gave us our Blessings—It was not government.

President Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Message

As was the case when Abraham Lincoln was president, we celebrated Thanksgiving this year amid a civil war; albeit we are fighting with weapons that serve to destroy not the physical body but the soul and spirit of America.

If you have been paying attention to what has been happening in America to industry (it went to China), the plough (California has forced over one million acres of the most productive farmland in the world to return to desert), our natural resources such as iron and coal (the government long ago began to put the kibosh on mining and the use of coal as an energy source), and the axe (much of the western United States – over 500 million acres of it – is off limits to development by way of the control of federal parks, the Bureau of Land Management, and other federal agencies), well then, you must admit we are now forsaking what our forefathers considered abundant blessings.

U.S. Now Number One in All the Wrong Things

But that is not all. Please consider further what the following guests had to say on my radio show about columns and books they have written concerning multiple threats to what made America free and great.

Scott Powell discussed his column at Townhall asking how is it that America has become the number one country in the world in human and child trafficking, criminal gang activity, and seeding our territory for insurrection and direct terrorist attacks by way of our open borders? All of which has been driven by a “kind of unprecedented anti-American wickedness directed at destabilizing the United States.” Powell, who is a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, has also sought to warn Americans about revisions to the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 5240.1, which would authorize and expand the reach of military power on U.S. soil with a view towards authorizing the military (read: U.S. Marines rather than National Guard) to assist in civil disturbances. All this on top of the fact that the FBI, CIA, and the Department of Justice (not to mention the IRS) have become politicized and weaponized against conservatives.

Janet Levy, writing for American Thinker, discussed her column about the 100-year-old plan by communists to destroy the West by “capturing the minds of its elites, artists, academicians, and students” with a view towards the abolition of culture, as outlined in former CIA Agent J. Michael Waller’s book, “Big Intel: How the CIA and FBI Went from Cold War Heroes to Deep State Villains” (whom I also interviewed). Waller outlines this planned abolition of culture as the “wholesale destruction of history, belief, and values, right down to the tearing apart of family life and the sexualization of small children to dehumanize the next generation.”

Daniel Greenfield, writing for Front Page magazine, summed up where we are heading in an article explaining “How Every Leftist Cause Begins as Humanitarianism and Ends as Terrorism.” He begins with the errors of the French Revolution that the left in America is replicating today. “Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death; the last, much the easiest to bestow” (“O Guillotine,” from “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens).

Leftism Ends in Terrorism

Greenfield writes, “the average leftist is a deeply insincere humanitarian who cares about others only as a vehicle for developing an identity and asserting it on a public stage. They care about rising oceans, polar bears, women in hijabs, men in dresses, drug dealers in the ghetto, eco-terrorists in prison, racist highways, and dead terrorists… as long as it fits the larger agenda of asserting their will over society from a moral high ground. Secular leftist movements seize power while they fix nothing and repair nothing because they are only pretending to save the world when in reality, they are out to rule it. And that is why eventually every leftist cause that begins as humanitarianism ends in terrorism.” On that last point, Greenfield points to Hamas, which cares so much for the Palestinians that they must annihilate Jews.

May we reflect accordingly as Lincoln aptly finishes his proclamation with, “I recommend to [the American People] that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience… fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation.”

  1. Thanksgiving is the only true American religious holiday that is not formally celebrated by organized religion. Thanksgiving transcends all religious beliefs and is truly American. Thanksgiving is celebrated by people of all religious persuasions, even atheists. Atheists will argue that they do no give thanks to a religious deity, they are thankful for their jobs, their friends, their houses and more. Unlike other religious holidays, atheists do participate in the festivities of Thanksgiving. And yes! They do eat turkey too.

Little known or remembered Thanksgiving facts:

    First Thanksgiving: 1621
    First Macy’s parade: 1924
First Thanksgiving football game: 1934, Detroit Lions/Chicago Bears
First unofficial Presidential Parden: 1863. President Lincoln gave a pass to his son Todd’s pet turkey.
First traditional Presidential Parden: 1947, Harry Truman
2011 Macy’s Parade: 3 miles long and watched by 44 million TV viewers
