Colman: REPUBLICANS NEED A WINNER

The most fascinating part of the 2024 election is that as more charges are brought against Trump, the stronger he gets.  In Iowa, the Governor endorsed DeSantis—a very popular governor of Iowa—and Trump INCREAES his support.

In New Hampshire—those opposing Trump are not looking to Republicans voting against him, they are looking at NPP’s—non Republicans—to vote against him.  They understand the Republican Party voters are supporting him.  So, these so called GOP leaders want others to undermine the Republican choice.

We are less than a month from the Iowa caucus—at the end of that day, it may be all over but the shouting.

REPUBLICANS NEED A WINNER

By Richard Colman, Exclusive to the California Political News and Views,  12/17/23   www.capoliticalnewsandviews.com

The Republican Party needs someone who can win a presidential election.

Donald Trump may be ahead in Republican polls, but he is too old to be president.  (So is Joe Biden).

Recently, Trump talked about being a dictator on his first day in office if he is re-elected in 2024.  Where in the American Constitution does the word “dictator” appear?  America needs a law-abiding president, not a dictator.

Trump has said that he favors a 10% tariff on all imports into America.  Tariffs are for losers, a recent opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal said.

If America imposes a tariff on imported goods, other nations will retaliate.  A tariff is nothing but a tax.  With a trade war, worldwide commerce will shrink, bringing about an economic depression.

When President Herbert Hoover, in 1930, signed a law putting a punitive tariff on imports, Hoover aggravated the Great Depression.  When the tariffs were repealed, America’s economy performed better.  In his 1932 election campaign, Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, trounced Hoover, a Republican running for re-election.

Trump is an authoritarian.  He helped put justices on the U.S. Supreme Court who overturned the right of a woman to have an abortion during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.  Since that High Court Decision, which was released on June 24, 2022, seven states, many of them conservative states, have passed laws to allow abortions.

Whether one is for or against abortion, the proper conservative response to the matter is to uphold traditional values, meaning keeping the government out of one’s personal life.  The Constitution guarantees freedom of worship.  If the government banned the practice of Christianity, Judaism, or any other religion, freedom of worship would be meaningless.

In recent months, The Wall Street Journal, not a liberal publication, has said repeatedly that Republicans have to deal effectively with the abortion issue.  Failure to act, the Journal has said, will mean that Democrats will be winning more elections.

Segments of the Republican Party -– generally states in the Bible Belt -– have placed strong restrictions on abortion.  The recent matter of Kate Cox, a 31-year-old married mother of two in Texas, was told by her physician that she (Cox) faced giving a still birth to the infant she is now carrying.  The Texas Supreme Court denied Cox, a white woman, an opportunity to have an abortion.  To avoid the Texas restrictions, Cox went to another state to abort her fetus.  Why can’t government leave Cox alone?

In addition to Trump, another Republican presidential candidate has an authoritarian streak.  Ron DeSantis is the governor of Florida.  DeSantis has placed restrictions on abortion and on what school children can read.  Local school districts, not the State of Florida, should decide what reading material is appropriate.

The Republicans do have a case for halting illegal immigration.  The big question is this:  Does the placement of restrictions of illegal aliens have enough potency to win a presidential election?

In foreign policy, Republicans must support Israel, which, Hamas, on Oct. 7, 2023, brutally attacked.  Hamas is a Muslim terrorist organization.  Israel is a democracy.  What happened to Israelis on Oct. 7 is the worst attack on Jews since the Adolf Hitler era.

Also, Republicans must support Ukraine in its war against Russia, which is a run by Vladimir Putin, a notorious imperialist and a dictator.

The time has come for Republicans to endorse smaller government, less bureaucracy, a balanced budget, and more individual freedom.  Furthermore, Republicans must take a strong stance against criminal behavior.  In recent months, Americans have witnessed hordes of hoodlums looting businesses.  The time has come to place heavy penalties on law-breakers.

On Dec. 12, 2013, the stock market hit a record high.  Gasoline prices are falling.  Inflation is being tamed.  These factors bode well for Democrats.

Republicans need to come up with some ideas that will appeal to enough American voters to win the presidency.

  1. Didn’t we hear this “Trump can’t win” in 2016?

The Republican base firmly believes that Donald Trump won his re-election in 2020 and that the election was stolen by shenanigans embraced by the Democrat party. The base also believes that Republican leadership is weaker than a wet noodle. Not only did the RNC and state GOPs refuse to fight for Trump in 2020, but the RNC disappeared in Arizona in 2022 when it was obvious the gubernatorial election was stolen from Kari Lake.

Yet, this same GOP leadership comes crawling to the base at every campaign asking us to make phone calls, knock on doors, distribute flyers, hold meet and greets, write postcards, send email messages, etc. Why? Just so they can be elected or re-elected and go to D.C. to vote with Democrats on castrating the U.S. Constitution?
