Fleischman: In A Bipartisan Vote, Congress Rejects Crazy California Ban On Gas Powered Cars by 2035

Democrats believe you should have a choice if you want to kill a baby.  But oppose your free choice of the car you wish to drive.  Hypocrites

“This gas car ban, which Governor Gavin Newsom has championed, was a disaster waiting to happen. Sacramento’s plan to require all-electric vehicles by 2035 ignored the glaring realities of affordability, infrastructure, and consumer wants and needs. EVs are still not affordable for most people, costing over $60,000 compared to $35,000 for a gas-powered car. Our charging infrastructure is a mess—particularly in rural areas—and California’s blackout-prone electric grid can’t handle the demand. With 11 other states following our rules, this policy covers 40% of the U.S. auto market, threatening to disrupt supply chains and eliminate affordable options for millions. The automakers have warned about the consequences, but Sacramento went ahead, putting green ideology ahead of the needs of working families who depend on gas-powered vehicles for their livelihood. This policy is completely lacking in prudence.

This policy is not only unrealistic—it’s unfair and elitist. Newsom and his Sacramento allies might enjoy the luxury of EVs and urban charging stations, but what about the Modesto mechanic or the Riverside teacher? These mandates hit the poorest the hardest, forcing them to shoulder higher costs and fewer choices.”

If you want an EV, buy it.  But should some Hollywood Slicky force you to buy an expensive car HE wants you to drive?  That is arrogance.  That is Gavin Newsom.

In A Bipartisan Vote, Congress Rejects Crazy California Ban On Gas Powered Cars by 2035

35 Democrats joined with every House Republicans to reject one of Gavin Newsom’s Signature Policies

Jon Fleischman, Flashreport,  5/2/25  https://theflashreport.substack.com/p/in-a-bipartisan-vote-congress-rejects?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=4841705&post_id=162671380&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=x9o3&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives handed Sacramento’s radical climate agenda a substantial blow, voting 246-164 to repeal the Biden administration’s EPA waiver that had allowed California—and the 11 states that have joined it—to ban new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales by 2035. That 35 Democrats, including California Representatives George Whitesides and Lou Correa, voted with Republicans indicates that even Democrats see the craziness of this policy. This vote is a rare victory for common sense and a much-needed check on a runaway agenda that’s been hurting Californians for far too long.

This gas car ban, which Governor Gavin Newsom has championed, was a disaster waiting to happen.

These mandates hit the poorest the hardest, forcing them to shoulder higher costs and fewer choices. I’ve been calling out this kind of reckless governance for a while now. In my April 14, 2025, California Globe column, California’s Carbon Crusade: A Reckless Assault on Prudence, I wrote, “California’s rulers, headed by Governor Gavin Newsom, lack the humility to acknowledge their limits. Their carbon crusade ignores the state’s poverty, housing shortage, and relative global insignificance—less than 1% of emissions.” I stand by that assessment. This gas car ban is a poster child for Sacramento’s extreme agenda, placing the needs of our people secondary to limited global impact, an apparent failure of sensible leadership.

Circling back on this because I think it is significant, that the House vote was bipartisan underscores the discontent with this level of crazy regulative overreach. Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA), the leader of the effort to pass this resolution, encapsulated the moment well on X yesterday morning: “The House of Representatives just passed my Resolution to stop California’s insane gas car ban. It was a bipartisan vote. This is a tremendous victory for common sense and a terrible embarrassment for Gavin Newsom.” I could agree more—Newsom’s embarrassment is well-deserved. Sacramento’s attempt to dictate national policy through its Clean Air Act waiver was an overreach that needed to be stopped.

This House vote is a win since it is a big step in preventing a specific policy from failing while reminding Sacramento that it cannot impose its utopian fantasies on the rest of the country. The Senate must follow suit and kill this waiver once and for all. Californians—and all Americans—deserve the freedom to choose what they drive without Sacramento’s detached dictates holding them hostage. This vote holds out the prospect of a more balanced approach that prioritizes affordability and consumer choice ahead of blind environmental zealotry.
