ODDS AND ENDS THOUGHTS

  1.  Sometimes campaigning gets to a candidate and they go over the edge.

Last week CRP Regional Vice Chair held an event featuring Congressman Mike Garcia.  They had about 200 people attended—great turnout and lots of energy for 2024.

As part of the program, Hernandez had LAGOP Chair Tim O’Reilly say a few words.  Part of his presentation was the need for folks to donate to the LAGOP and to the CRP.  Normal stuff.

But, that set off Senate candidate Denise Gary-Pandrol.  During this portion of the O’Reilly speech, Pandrol jumped out of her seat, took the microphone from O’Reilly and screamed that folks should ONLY give to candidates, never to the Party.  This was all captured on a phone, by Keith Cascio.  But, O’Reilly screamed—“Keith, stop taping”.  So if you want to see this meltdown by Pandrol, ask Keith Cascio for the video.

Importantly, is this emotional action by Pandrol what we want in a candidate?  At a CRA event a few months ago, she was caught yelling at a fellow GOP candidate for Senate.  Is this a pattern?

  •  WHERE IS WALDO?  WHERE IS GARVEY?

In June, 2023 the famous baseball player Steve Garvey gave a few minutes scripted speech in Orange County.  Since then he has not been seen.  In late June someone on his behalf RSVP’d him for a Sonmona County GOP event, reconfirmed a few days before.  But, when he found out he was going to be questioned and an FBI investigation fo him—and his lack of child support payments for some of his children, he failed to show up.

The last time he spoke about public policy was in 2012, in an interview and in general terms.  Since then, with economic problems, natural security, open borders, crime, drugs, Bidenomics and more, not a peep—not a word.  It is as if he did not care about government.  Now, at 74, he appears to be running for Senate—but does he know it?

Tomorrow, November 4 in Costa Mesa, the California Republican Assembly will be meeting to endorse a candidate for U.S. Senate.  He knows he will be asked why he wants the support of a pro-family organization, since his background seems more like a Democrat.  He will be asked why he waited 74 years to get involved.  I know he will be asked what he did to elect Trump in 2016 and 2020—and who he supports for President in 2024.  Oh, and why he has been silent on the Israel/Hamas war?

I know I should not make predictions—but I predicted he would not face the music in Sonoma in June—now I predict he will not face the CRA.  As a ball player he faced a lot of great pitchers—and did extremely well.  It appears that in politics, he is not ready for the Big Leagues—not even the Little League.  But, his handlers will make a lot of money off of this ghost candidate.

  • Has anybody missed the bigots of Hollywood?

“Striking actors hold massive rally in Los Angeles as negotiations progress closer to a deal — As more than 3,000 striking actors and supporters united Wednesday at a massive rally in Los Angeles, the performers union, SAG-AFTRA, and the major

Hollywood studios appeared to make progress on key issues and inch closer to a deal.” Christi Carras in the Los Angeles Times$ — 11/2/23

  • This is why more folks are leaving California—they can no longer afford the cost of living and the cost of government.

“Groups team up to combat fast-rising PG&E electric and gas bills — Consumer groups, politicians, labor unions and advocacy organizations have teamed up to try to combat fast-rising increases in PG&E monthly bills and demand more accountability from the utility behemoth.” George Avalos in the San Jose Mercury$ — 11/2/23

(Periodically the California Political News and Views will publish tidbits of political news, to keep you in the loop of what the pooh bahs know.  The phrase “tom/tom’s” comes from my mentor, Lorelei Kinder who never passed a rumor, just called to tell me what she heard on the “TomTom’s”.  This column is named in her honor.)

  1. Steve Garvey was a great ballplayer. A clutch hitter. In politics he seems he can’t use the clutch, rather he has hit the brakes. Athletes have been told what to do in the days of the big money agents and the media. Too many bean balls?
What would have The Babe done? Likely eat 25 hot dogs and down about a gallon a beer. Fans would have elected him anyway. Steve’s well publicized child support issues will not garner him extra votes.
At the peak of his career, with the support issues hanging over him, I was struggling to make court enforced child support payments. Never missed a one! He’s not going to get any votes from dad’s that faithfully paid their obligations, despite the edicts of male hating judges. Dads rarely got fair deals in a California divorce, despite the changes in the law. Those old judges never changed their collective mindsets.
Steve, go sell some hot dogs in the cheap seats!

  2. Col Steve–you hit it on the nose. Why would a Party based on family values support a deadbeat Dad for Senate. Garvey has done noting in 74 years to show interest in public policy. Seriously, does he know he is running for the Senate?
