California Republican Party Might Have Major Change in Financing

For many years, the California Republican Party had a financing mechanism called “One Ask”.  Under this, money raised by either by the Assembly Caucus, Senate Caucus or the CRP is put in my pot.  Then it is divided with 33% for the Assembly, 33% for the Senate and 33% for the CRP.

Recently the legislators have approached both candidates for Chair with a change they are proposing.  Under the new formula, the legislators want the cut to be 45% for the Assembly, 45% for the Senate and 10% for the CRP.  That is a 23% cut for the CRP.

The bigger question is why is the legislators wanting to do this?  Is it because, they do not trust either candidate for Chair?  Or, do they think the CRP pays salaries that are too high, have too many high priced consultants or?

The good news is that the CRP just had a $2.7 million donation.  But if the CRP loses 23%, that donation may not go for voter registration, candidates or election integrity.  Instead, the money will go to salaries and CRP overhead.

Several years ago the One Ask program was suspended and the CRP almost went bankrupt. That is how important this money has become.

(Periodically the California Political News and Views will publish tidbits of political news, to keep you in the loop of what the pooh bahs know.  The phrase “tom/tom’s” comes from my mentor, Lorelei Kinder who never passed a rumor, just called to tell me what she heard on the “TomTom’s”.  This column is named in her honor.)
