BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Park Rangers arrested a woman after allegedly cutting the chain to a flagpole and replacing the American flag with the Mexican flag at Hart Park Thursday morning. The arrest comes as Eyewitness News interviewed her for protesting in front of City Hall a week prior.
At around 9:36 a.m., Park Rangers responded to Hart Park after they received multiple reports of a person trying to steal the American flag from the park’s entrance, said Kern County deputies.
In body-worn camera footage shared by the sheriff’s department, Park Rangers found a vehicle stuck in the muddy grass next to the flagpole when they arrived.
Rangers found that Crystal Aguilar, 24, had allegedly cut the chain that held the flagpole, removed the American flag, and before raising the Mexican flag.
KCSO said in the release, that the flag was “thrown it into the mud” while the video depicts it was tied to a post.
Aguilar allegedly resisted arrest and made multiple verbal threats to the Park Rangers, said officials.
Aguilar was arrested and booked on charges of threatening a peace officer, vandalism, resisting arrest, trespassing in a vehicle, and violation of county ordinance for possession of marijuana in a park.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office shared video of her arrest.
During her arrest, she allegedly said to deputies and park rangers, “And you’re going to pay. My dad is going to kill you and all your family. You think it’s a joke until it’s not.”
Eyewitness News interviewed Aguilar last month when she was advocating for immigrant rights in front of Bakersfield City Hall.
