Eber: Keep the 99 Cent Store Open

I will admit it—I shopped at the 99 Cent store.  Great prices on a few staples.  Most canned food, bread, eggs, milk and other daily items are the same.  Buy at Safeway, Von’s or 99 Cent and you get the same product.  Why pay more?

“Over the years denial of shopping at the 99 Cent store has been a form of humor among friends.  It is thought no respectable person might pass thru the doors of this cut rate establishment.  One of my buddies even contemplated purchasing an outfit from Cross Dress for Less to avoid the stigma of being seen there.

The fact is this discount palace has attracted folks from all economic backgrounds from the very poor to those riding around in BMW’s and Mercedes.

Over the years consumers have been able to find cereal, pet food, fresh vegetables, flower pots, canned foods, bread, cookies, and other household goods at a fraction of the cost of what Safeway or Walgreens might charge.”

Watch as other “dollar” stores start closing.  Thanks to Newsom, we are all going to pay high grocery store prices (up 22% since Biden took office).  He is creating a caste system in America—the rich, the poor and the illegal.  Only the poor are harmed by him.

Keep the 99 Cent Store Open

Over the years denial of shopping at the 99 Cent store has been a form of humor among  friends.  It is thought no respectable person might pass thru the doors of this cut rate establishment.  One of my buddies even contemplated purchasing an outfit from Cross Dress for Less to avoid the stigma of being seen there.

The fact is this discount palace has attracted folks from all economic backgrounds from the very poor to those riding around in BMW’s and Mercedes..

Over the years consumers have been able to find cereal, pet food, fresh vegetables, flower pots, canned foods, bread, cookies, and other household goods at a fraction of the cost of what Safeway or Walgreens might charge.

One can still fill an entire shopping cart at the 99 Cent Store and still receive change from their Twenty at the check-out stand.

If ever there was a case of “Don’t it seem to go, that you don’t know what you lost till it’s gone” the closure of my favorite shopping haunt fills this definition.  How such an experience can be replicated is unimaginable.

Sure there are other businesses around with similar formats.  However, deep down. most of us who patronize  99 Cent stores feel their competitors will not be able duplicate the service they have provided over the years.

Some of us who have been regular customers of the bargain emporium may well require professional counseling.  For once I desire to take on a woke persona that if a subject bothers me, society should make suitable adjustments to ease my pain.

To counter our clinical depression for closing 99 Cent Stores, will the government provide a 12 step program for those of use who struggle purchasing  produce, health care needs, flower pots, discontinued BBQ sauce, and other essentials at retail prices?

Should Retail Therapy prove to be ineffective, perhaps, government vouchers can be issued to assist the transition of consumers to abandon their previous bargain hunting ways?  I am not sure if a Halfway House for disgruntled shoppers might work very well.

Or better yet why not ask politicians to pass emergency legislation to save the 99 Cent Store from closing their doors next month? If  “can’t fail” businesses are bailed out by government intervention, why not this institution that has proven so valuable in fighting inflation?

In my case I will miss the 99 Cent Store a lot more than saving General Motors or First Republic Bank from bankruptcy.  Buying a large bottle spaghetti sauce for less than 2 bucks, is more important to me than the ability to  purchase an electric powered Chevy for over 50 Grand!

The list goes on from glue to paper clips that has allowed me to avoid entering the premises of Staples most of the time. I will miss 99 Cent Store so much. By comparrison, the Oakland A’s baseball team moving to Las Vegas is of no consequence to me.

Even at Costco, will I ever be able to replicate the 99 Cent Stores dollar shave club which covers over a month of supplying my razor blade needs?  Who wants to pay four or five bucks for a toothbrush at Rite-Aid?

How about  Safeway Signature brand mustard that will now cost me double?

Trader Joe’s is the only place I frequent that the closure of  my bargain paradise does not affect.  Somehow, their quality always wins out over all competitors.

Even with long lines, no one complains as the 99 Cent Store’s attributes far outweigh any inconvenience. This place rocks!

The bottom line is closing the 361 branches of the 99 Cent Store should somehow be avoided.  If we can save Harp SealsRed Tailed Frogs, and Harvest Mice from extinction, why not a business that means so much to all of us?

Were King Lear around now he might say, “Why should a dog, a horse, a rat, have life, And thou no breath at all?

If Donald Trump were to take up this cause, he might even carry California.  Where else can you purchase a pregnancy test for less than a buck and balance ones budget at the same time?

At this juncture no protests are being planned demanding our favorite bargain place remain open.  As they say in the trade, “film at 11”
