BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/FOX58) — The 2024 Point-In-Time Count (PIT) reveals that people experiencing homelessness have increased by 37% in Kern County, compared to last year’s report.
The annual PIT is composed of two parts, said officials:
- The sheltered count, which is a single-night count that includes data from all emergency shelters, navigation centers, and transitional housing
- The unsheltered count, which consists of three days and involves volunteers who are sent to different areas in Kern County to interview unsheltered homeless individuals.
Two additional days of the unsheltered count were done to obtain a more accurate overall count and to complete further counts of rural Kern County and Kern riverbed areas.
A total of 2,669 people experiencing homelessness were counted by volunteers.
The following was found: 1,663 individuals were found to be unsheltered (62%), while 1,006 individuals (38%) utilized shelters. Overall, this year’s count represents a 37% increase from the 2023 count, according to officials.
As such in past years, the majority of the homeless population was found in the Bakersfield metro area, including the unincorporated areas of east Bakersfield, Oildale, and Rosedale.
